HISTORY:
Alex was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. Alex was four years old when her father died. She has almost no memory of him, and what little she remembers she expects she’s fabricated based on photos and stories. She was raised by her mother Rosalin and grandparents until Rosalin began a serious relationship with Don Burroughs. Don became her primary father figure and raised her as his own, along with his three sons, Devon, Reese, and Richard. The three boys were older than Alex and living in the same household with them was difficult to get used to. However, she was lucky enough to have her own room while the two youngest of the boys had to share.
School was difficult for Alex. Academically, she loved certain subjects: History, English, Art. But, she had a hard time with math and science classes. She was also a bit of a social butterfly. She loved talking to people and making new friends, and her schedule was often packed with social as well as extra-curricular activities. She was a bit of a tom-boy in some aspects. She was just as likely to play football with the boys as she was to hit the Mall with the girls.
By the time she was ready to graduate high school, Alex had racked up a long list of boyfriends, friends, frienemies, and academic achievements. She was a member of the student council for three years, she worked for the school paper and yearbook, and she played girls softball her sophomore and junior year. Her senior year she dropped softball to take up yearbook, figuring it would look better on a college application.
Alex graduated from high school and went to Northwestern University to major in Journalism. She worked hard in college, often foregoing social activities to focus on academics. She made the Dean’s List all four years and had the help of scholarships. Alex dated less than she had in high school, focusing more on her academics. She worked in the mail room at a local company and when she graduated she got an apartment in Chicago, IL. She was promoted to an assistant position, which was basically a glorified file clerk.
After working for a few years at the same company, Alex started looking for a more fulfilling job. She applied for editing, copy-editing, and freelance writing positions in various places all over the country. She got a side-job at a local newspaper writing obituaries part-time along with her full-time job. Between the two jobs, she didn’t have time for much else. She was tired most of the time, and rarely had the energy for socializing as she used to.
When Alex was twenty-six, she got a job opportunity she couldn’t pass up. She would be working as a copy-editor for a gossip magazine based in Los Angeles. It was a big change, but she took a chance and relocated, despite her family’s misgivings. It was difficult at first. Her job had a catty atmosphere among her co-workers she wasn’t used to, and didn’t pay enough for her to cover all her expenses. She got another job working at a library on nights and weekends to pick up some extra money. Again, she found herself working a grueling schedule.
After a few years of copy-editing, Alex began pitching ideas for articles that actually got accepted. After getting a few articles published in the magazine, Alex was given a promotion to columnist. In addition to copy-editing, she wrote a monthly column about fashion do’s and don’ts. She received emails and letters from readers asking for fashion advice, which led to Alex writing a weekly advice column. With this promotion, she was able to leave her library job and focus completely on writing.
Living in Los Angles, Alex got used to reading about gang violence and mysterious deaths. In her off time, she began researching mysterious happenings in local areas. When Sunnydale was wiped off the map by an alleged earthquake, Alex began to believe something was awry. She focused her private research on the supernatural, looking into the possibility that some creatures from myths and fairytales were real.
With the convenient Internet boom, Alex began working from home more often than the office, giving her much more free time and making her a more social person. With the recent increase in supernatural activity in the city, Alex has started getting very concerned for the city’s wellbeing.

WRITING SAMPLE:
Dear Down and Out,
It’s always difficult to pick yourself up and get back on the horse when finances are concerned. Personally, I’ve only recently been able to live comfortably working only one job. You’re in a difficult position where you’re having to choose between working more hours and making more money and spending time with your kids…
Alex jumped and stopped typing when her phone rang, startling her. She frowned and looked at the time in the corner of her computer screen. It was after midnight. Who would be calling at this time of night?
Maybe something happened, she thought.
Alex got up from her desk to answer the phone on the sidetable by the couch. She picked up on the third ring.
“Hello?”
“Alex? Are you alright?”
She wrinkled her eyebrows, hearing her brother’s voice on the other end of the call.
“Devon?”
“No, it’s the Pope. Who else would call you at… what’s it 12:30 for you?”
Alex couldn’t help smirking slightly. Devon was always working late nights.
“Just about,” she said. “What’s up?”
“Not much. I just wanted to check in on you. I haven’t heard from you in a couple weeks, and with everything going on in L.A. right now – have you seen the news coming out of there lately? It’s insane.”
She sat down on the edge of the couch.
“What have you heard?” she asked.
“Murder, rioting, looting, gang violence. What the hell’s going on over there?”
Alex shrugged reflexively.
“Nothing in my neck of the woods,” she said. “Downtown’s seeing most of the action. They don’t seem to be bothering with the residential areas. Not yet, anyway.”
There was a pause on the other end.
“What?” she asked.
“I don’t like the sound of that ‘yet.’”
Alex rolled her eyes.
“I’m fine, Devon. And anyway, what am I supposed to do? Move?”
“Yeah! I mean, temporarily. You work from home anyway, don’t you?”
Alex leaned back and let herself fall onto the couch with a sigh. This wasn’t the first time one of her family members had tried to talk her out of living in the big, bad city of Los Angeles. Now that the entire population seemed to have gone insane they had one more excuse.
