HISTORY:
Buffy was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She had a normal childhood until she was eight years old. She was close friends with her cousin, Celia. When Celia got sick and had to go to the hospital, Buffy went to visit her. Buffy watched helplessly as her cousin screamed and struggled against some invisible force. Celia was killed by a demon only visible to those who were sick. Buffy has been afraid of hospitals ever since.
Buffy adjusted well to school, making friends easily, though she didn’t exactly excel academically. She preferred the social aspect of school to the learning part. When she started going to Hemery High School, Buffy became a cheerleader and ran with the popular crowd. Although her social life thrived, Buffy’s home life was an entirely different story. She began having violent dreams and her parents argued non-stop.
In 1996, Buffy was visited by a watcher named Merrick, who informed her that she was a slayer. She began training and it was difficult for her at first. She desperately tried to balance her home life, social life, and her new slayer duties. She started having problems keeping up with school, skipping classes due to supernatural necessity, alienating her friends to keep them out of danger. The school and her parents interpreted this as delinquent behavior. After she accidentally burned down the Hemery High gym fighting vampires, Buffy was expelled. This event coincided with her parents’ divorce and Buffy and her mother, Joyce, relocated to Sunnydale, California.
On her first day at Sunnydale High, Buffy was befriended by Cordelia Chase, one of the popular kids. Although Buffy was relieved she still at least seemed like she belonged in the popular crowd, she was put off by the way Cordelia treated the less popular students. Buffy was quick to befriend Willow Rosenberg and her friends, Xander Harris and Jesse McNally, which put her on Cordelia’s bad side. Buffy also met her new watcher, the school librarian Rupert Giles. She was not at all thrilled that she was expected to resume her slayer duties after what had happened at her last school. However, when a mysterious man named Angel warned her about something called The Harvest, she found it impossible to ignore her calling. After a group of vampires tried to kidnap Buffy’s new friends, she managed to save all but one of them: Jesse. He was turned into a vampire and killed by Xander Harris, an event that would forever alter all their lives.
Buffy was able to stop The Harvest with the help of her friends, stopping a powerful vampire known as The Master from escaping his underground prison. She and her watcher continued to investigate supernatural phenomena with the help of Xander, Willow, and sometimes Angel. Buffy quickly developed feelings for Angel, though their relationship was compromised when Buffy discovered he was a vampire. After struggling with what to do with this information and ultimately deciding to kill Angel to protect her friends and family, Angel revealed that he was cursed with a human soul. He killed his old flame, Darla, to protect Buffy, and became a part of her group of trusted friends.
Buffy’s sophomore year culminated in a prophecy that Buffy would die at the hands of The Master. Buffy was devastated by this revelation, but ultimately she went to face her destiny and fight The Master. He was more powerful than she’d anticipated, and expecting her arrival. He fed on her and left her to drown in a shallow pool of water. While he escaped into the world above, Angel and Xander found Buffy and Xander performed CPR to revive her. Buffy was able to slay The Master and go on with her life.
After returning from a summer with her dad in L.A., Buffy had to destroy The Master’s bones to prevent his followers from resurrecting him. She began a serious relationship with Angel, despite his nature. This was complicated when two vampires from his past, Spike and Drusilla, made an appearance in Sunnydale. The gang was further perplexed when a second slayer, Kendra Young, came to Sunnydale, having been called as a result of Buffy’s brief death. Despite a bit of friction between the two women, Buffy and Kendra were able to work together and learn from one another.
On Buffy’s seventeenth birthday, she lost her virginity to Angel. As a result, he lost his soul and became the vampire he had been prior to being cursed. This persona was called Angelus. He realigned himself with Spike and Drusilla and made it his mission to terrorize Buffy and her friends. Buffy came up against him a number of times, but was unable to bring herself to kill him. It wasn’t until he killed Giles’ girlfriend, Jenny Calendar, that Buffy realized she’d have to kill Angel to protect her loved ones. Unfortunately, more damage was done before she got the chance. After Angel lured Buffy away from her friends, they were attacked by Drusilla and her minions. Xander was injured, Willow was put into a coma, and Kendra was killed.
As Buffy prepared for a final battle with Angel, she was expelled from Sunnydale High and suspected of murdering Kendra. She found an unlikely ally in Spike, who didn’t like Angel’s plan to end the world. After a confrontation with her mother, Buffy was forced to reveal that she was the slayer. Joyce responded by kicking Buffy out of the house and Buffy went to fight Angel. Meanwhile, Willow awoke from her coma and worked a spell that would restore Angel’s soul. The spell worked, but not before Angelus could use his blood to open a portal to Hell. Buffy was forced to kill him, sending him into a hell dimension. She left Sunnydale and went back to L.A., where she took the name Anne and started working at a diner.
In L.A., Buffy crossed paths with a woman named Lily, who she’d met once before in Sunnydale. Recognizing Buffy as the girl who had saved her from a group of hungry vampires, Lily came to her for help when her boyfriend went missing. Buffy and Lily discovered a demon was collecting people from the city streets and sending them to a hell dimension to be used as slaves. Buffy rescued Lily and several others and, realizing she couldn’t escape her destiny, Buffy returned to Sunnydale to find her friends hunting vampires in her stead. There was tension between them all from the time she returned. This came to a boiling point at a welcome home party they threw for her, but they were soon able to patch things up.
When Angel mysteriously returned from Hell, Buffy found him in a feral state. She kept his return a secret, helping rehabilitate him. When her friends found her out they were hurt and angry. Angel was able to earn their trust to some degree when he saved Willow’s life, but tensions still ran high for some time. When another slayer named Faith Lehane came to Sunnydale to replace Kendra, Buffy was threatened by Faith’s presence. All her friends were quick to accept Faith and seemed to find her intriguing. This immediately created tension between the two slayers.
Buffy and Angel began dating once again and Willow’s werewolf boyfriend, Oz, had joined the group as an ally. When Buffy turned eighteen, she found herself stripped of her slayer abilities. Although there had been a time or two when Buffy would have given anything not to be the slayer, without her abilities she felt helpless and lost. This turned out to be a test administered by the Watchers Council that required Buffy to defeat a vampire without her special abilities. Unable to watch Buffy struggle, Giles revealed that this was a test, breaking one of the rules of the Council. Buffy was devastated, but she managed to defeat the vampire and pass the test. However, Giles was stripped of his watcher duties and Wesley Wyndam-Pryce was sent to guide Buffy and Faith.
After Faith accidentally killed a civilian, Buffy tried to keep the event a secret. However, feeling concerned that Faith was traveling down a dangerous path, Buffy eventually told Giles what had happened. No longer trusting Buffy and her friends, Faith began working for Mayor Wilkins, who was planning an ascension ritual and serving dark forces. This led to Faith and Buffy becoming enemies. After Faith poisoned Angel, Buffy went after her intending to use her blood to cure Angel. Buffy ended up stabbing Faith and Faith escaped on the back of a truck. However, she slipped into a coma and wouldn’t awake for a number of months.
Buffy ended up allowing Angel to feed on her to cure him. After that, Angel realized he was a danger to Buffy as long as they were together and he decided to leave Sunnydale. Buffy was heartbroken, but did not let her emotions prevent her from stopping the ascension. On Graduation Day, the senior class defeated the Mayor and destroyed the school in the process. As Angel moved to L.A., Buffy attended UC Sunnydale with Willow and Oz.
College was difficult for Buffy. While Willow and Oz fit in and seemed to thrive, Buffy struggled with her classes and making friends. After trying to have her own Thanksgiving dinner, Buffy was confronted with a Native American vengeance spirit. She managed to defeat it with Angel’s help, although he helped her in secret and left without contacting her. When she discovered this, Buffy was furious and she went to L.A. to confront Angel. She helped him defeat a Mohra demon before returning home to Sunnydale.
Buffy met Riley Finn at UC Sunnydale and the two were attracted to one another. When they crossed paths while fighting demons called The Gentlemen, they discovered they both had a secret. Buffy revealed she was a slayer and Riley revealed he was working for an organization called The Initiative that hunted and researched demons. Buffy tried to work with the group for a while, but she didn’t fit in with their militant no-questions-asked style. The group’s leader, Professor Maggie Walsh, grew wary of Buffy and attempted to have her killed. It was revealed that Professor Walsh had been creating a cyborg called Adam, who killed her upon waking.
Faith awoke from her coma and immediately came after Buffy, devastated that she’d killed Mayor Wilkins. She used a device to switch bodies with Buffy and Buffy was taken into custody by the Watchers Council. Her time as Faith revealed quite a bit about the other slayer. Buffy was able to escape custody and convince Giles of her identity and Willow and her girlfriend Tara were able to do a spell that reversed the swap. Faith fled to Los Angeles, where she tried to kill Angel. When Buffy arrived to save him, she was frustrated to find that Angel had befriended Faith and was trying to rehabilitate her. After a heated argument with Angel, Buffy returned to Sunnydale. Angel came after her and apologized, smoothing things over before he returned to L.A.
Riley ended up leaving The Initiative to join forces with Buffy. Spike joined forces with Adam and Buffy and her friends performed a spell to combine all their essences into Buffy’s body. This made her very powerful for a short amount of time and she was able to defeat Adam. However, this angered the spirit of The First Slayer, who tormented the group in their dreams to deliver the message that the slayer must work alone.
Buffy encountered the famous vampire Dracula, which prompted her to fully embrace her life as the slayer. When a younger sister, Dawn, appeared in her life, nobody thought it at all strange. Everyone remembered Dawn always being in their lives. Buffy soon grew suspicious, sensing that there was something awry about Dawn. She soon discovered that Dawn was actually a mystical key made of energy that had been made into a human and placed with Buffy for protection. This caused tension between Buffy and Dawn, but eventually Buffy began to regard Dawn as a part of her family.
As Buffy began to emotionally distance herself from Riley, their relationship began to deteriorate, leading Riley to visit vampire brothels and allow himself to be fed on. This pushed Buffy further away from him and they ended their relationship. Riley left Sunnydale to return to a branch of the military. Soon after, Buffy learned that Spike had fallen in love with her. She was disgusted and quickly isolated him from the group.
After the death of her mother, Buffy was devastated. She was also overwhelmed by her new role as Dawn’s legal guardian. She dropped out of school to take care of her sister. Dawn began acting out with rebellious and reckless behavior. Buffy went on a vision quest to get some guidance. She was visited by The First Slayer, who told her death was her gift. When Buffy returned home she discovered a robot in her likeness had been wandering around in her stead. When she learned that Spike had forced Warren to make the robot to fulfill his fantasies, she was horrified. However, when Spike was captured by the hell-god, Glory, who was searching for the key, he endured torture and refused to reveal Dawn’s identity. Buffy saved Spike and welcomed him back to the group as a reward for his loyalty.
When Dawn was captured by Glory, Buffy had a mental breakdown. She was brought out of it by Willow and Buffy and her friends planned an attack on Glory. They succeeded in defeating her, but not before she could start the blood-letting ritual to open the walls between dimensions. Buffy sacrificed herself by jumping into the portal to save Dawn. She died and ascended to Heaven.
Willow and the rest of the gang performed a ritual and resurrected Buffy. This was traumatic for her and readjusting to life on Earth after being in Heaven was difficult. She felt disconnected from the world around her and she slipped into a depression. She revealed to Spike that her friends had pulled her out of Heaven and swore him to secrecy. However, when Dawn accidentally summoned a demon that forced everyone to reveal their inner feelings through song, Buffy revealed to her friends what she’d been going through. Once the truth was out, Buffy continued trying to live her life, struggling to pay the bills. She began leaning on Giles for support who, feeling he was coddling her too much, returned to England. Feeling disconnected and abandoned, Buffy sought comfort in Spike and they began a secret relationship. Buffy continued fighting the supernatural, despite her various emotional problems. She also struggled to hold down a steady job.
After Willow spiraled out of control due to an addiction to magic, Buffy had to put her own problems on hold. When Willow endangered Dawn while visiting a warlock, Buffy was furious and Willow stopped using magic. A visit from Riley, now married, made Buffy realize how unhappy she was and led her to break off her relationship with Spike. After Spike slept with Xander’s girlfriend, Anya, Buffy stepped in to save Spike from Xander and revealed her relationship with Spike. He ended up fleeing Sunnydale after a confrontation with Buffy.
When Tara was killed, Willow was consumed by darkness as a result of her grief. She became unimaginably powerful, but also evil. Buffy ended up having to fight Willow, but she wasn’t strong enough to defeat her. Giles intervened to save Buffy, but the only person who was able to reach Willow before she ended the world was Xander. These events were enough to pull Buffy out of her depression and give her a purpose in life once again.
With Sunnydale High renovated, Dawn began her freshman year and Buffy began working as a guidance counselor. Spike returned to Sunnydale with a soul and Buffy welcomed him back into the group. They began harboring potential slayers as agents of The First Evil began hunting them down in an attempt to wipe out the slayer line. Buffy began training them, hoping an army of slayers would be able to defeat The First. Faith soon arrived in Sunnydale to assist Buffy in training the potentials. An agent of The First named Caleb lured Buffy and the potentials into a trap. This led to the deaths of several girls and the loss of Xander’s eye. This led to a mutiny and the potentials made Faith their new leader.
While Faith accidentally led the potentials into yet another trap, Buffy located a powerful weapon called a slayer scythe, which allowed her to save Faith and the potentials. Angel returned to help Buffy defeat Caleb. After Angel returned to L.A., Willow performed a spell using the scythe that activated all potential slayers, making them an army of full slayers. Buffy and Faith led the slayers into the Hellmouth, where they battled a race of ancient vampires. Spike used an amulet to sacrifice himself, closing the Hellmouth. Buffy and what remained of her group escaped Sunnydale in a school bus as the town was destroyed.
Buffy traveled the world after that, rounding up slayers and fighting evil as she went. When she learned Angel was working for the evil law firm, Wolfram & Hart, Buffy further distanced herself from his group. She’s continued traveling to wherever she needs to be, training slayers and fighting the forces of darkness.

PERSONALITY: Buffy has undergone a lot of changes since becoming the slayer. She’s gone from a shallow, self-centered cheerleader to a mature, confident young woman. At the core, Buffy is righteous and loyal. She is always willing to make sacrifices for others. However, she’s also very dependent on other people. When she doesn’t have a support group around her she becomes depressed and disconnected. She also has a tendency to be a little self-centered when it comes to her personal relationships. She’s used to her friendships and relationships revolving around her and the slaying, so when someone else pulls some of that attention away, Buffy can become a bit defensive. She tends to be a bit of a control freak and has trouble sharing control with others and doesn’t take orders well.
Although Buffy is a loyal friend who will stand by her friends through thick and thin, she tends to be a very needy friend. She expects a lot of support from her friends and often doesn’t see when they need her in return. In a relationship, Buffy is a faithful and devoted lover, but the neediness she expects from her friendships carries over to her relationships. She needs a lot of attention and reassurance in a relationship and love often clouds her judgment. As a leader, Buffy is fully capable. She’s strong-willed and focused and does her best to guide those under her leadership to the best of her ability. However, she doesn’t often realize that others have just as much trouble taking blind orders as she does and she doesn’t take kindly to being questioned.

WRITING SAMPLE:
One thing Buffy would never get used to: driving. She'd never really been the best driver, and a car wasn't her typical go-to mode of transportation. Back in Sunnydale she'd walked everywhere, mostly because walking around town had been the most practical way to patrol for big bad beasties. In Cleveland she'd taken on the same practice, only driving when she needed to get somewhere fast. She'd gotten more speeding tickets than she'd ever admit and she had a tendency to accumulate a lot of dings and scrapes, brushing up against a fire hydrant or backing into a light post. Considering the fact that her daily routine consisted of kicking something's ass, those dings and scrapes were nothing to concern herself with when a car could easily be totalled by an over-zealous vampire.
Driving in L.A. was way more of a pain in the ass than she'd expected. The traffic was awful and she hadn't gotten to know her way around well enough yet to know any of the good shortcuts. Not by car, anyway. Buffy sighed as she sat in her car waiting in a line of traffic that had been moving at a glacial pace for at least ten minutes.
"Come on," she muttered.
She honked her horn and immediately felt bad for doing it. She hated it when people honked behind her in traffic. But, she had to do something to reveal her frustration. She wondered what the hold up was. Most likely a bottle-neck kind of deal where everyone was trying to merge at once somewhere up ahead. Maybe there was road construction, or an accident. It could've been anything, really. Buffy sighed and glanced down at the radio with the convenient digital clock in it. Dawn's plane would be landing any minute. Buffy let out a sigh of frustration and honked her horn a few times.
"Great. My first sisterly duty in L.A., and I'm already messing it up."
She ran a hand through her hair and just sat and waited for a while, inching her way slowly along the road as the traffic moved. What else could she do?
Finally, after what felt like an eternity in traffic Hell, the lanes opened up. Buffy compensated for being stuck in traffic by speeding her heart out once she got the chance. The spedometer climbed past sixty, then seventy, well over eighty. Buffy even weaved in and out of lanes all along the highway, which she knew was a big no-no. But, she didn't want to leave Dawn stranded at the airport thinking her big sister had once again found something more important to worry about. Admittedly, she also felt a little entitled to be a crazy driver after all the traffic. Buffy began to relax as she drove, feeling relieved that she at least wouldn't be more than ten or fifteen minutes late if she kept going the way she was going.
The police siren and flashing lights behind her were not a welcome sight. When were they ever, really? She glanced at the rear-view mirror, seeing the red and blue lights flashing behind her. The car didn't even look like a cop car. How was that fair?
"Ohhh, crap."
Buffy sighed and pulled the car over to the breakdown lane. The universe obviously did not want her to get to the airport on time. A knot formed in Buffy's stomache. This wasn't the first time she'd been pulled over for speeding. She knew how this worked. Depending on how nice the cop was and how cute she looked that day, she could get anything from a warning to a wopping fine. Though, going as fast as she'd been going, she very much doubted she'd get just a warning.
Her heart sank when the officer who approached her window wasn't only a female cop, but a State Trooper. Oh, this really wasn't her day.
"Good evening, ma'am," the cop said. "Can I see your license and registration, please?"
Buffy gave a nervous smile.
"Sure. Absolutely. Not a problem at all."
She reached into the passenger seat to grab her purse, but inadvertently knocked it over instead, spilling all of its contents onto the seat and the floor... which wouldn't be so bad if, along with her license, she didn't also have a few small vials of holy water, two stakes and a dagger in it.
"Oh... Oops."
Buffy glanced at the officer and laughed nervously as she tried to gather or hide the suspicious contents of her purse. Of course it didn't help that she kept getting restricted by the seat belt. She managed to get the dagger back in the bag, which was the main thing she was concerned about. Getting pulled over with a very obvious weapon in your car was never a good idea. Thank God the woman had no reason to check the trunk...
"I'm... such a clutz," she said, trying to shove one of the stakes somewhere. "Really, I sometimes can't even get out of the house in the morning without knocking a bunch of stuff over."
The officer narrowed her eyes and looked past Buffy toward the passenger's seat.
"Excuse me, ma'am, but what is that?"
Buffy felt her face getting hot. Uh-oh. That was never a good question coming from a cop, was it?
"Oh, it's a Donna Karen. I know, so three seasons ago, but it's such a cute bag and it goes with everything--"
"I don't care about the bag, ma'am. I'm talking about the object beside it."
Buffy looked over to see one of her stakes sitting on the seat beside the purse. Oh, God, would a stake be considered a deadly weapon?
"Oh, that? That's just... uh... part of a project. My sister, she has this thing she has to do for school... an art project. I'm picking her up from the library and she asked me to, you know, bring a few things. She's a real go-getter."
Please buy it, please buy it....
Everything she'd just said had been a lie. Well, she did have a sister she was picking up from somewhere, but everything else was a lie. She wasn't even sure why she'd said she was picking Dawn up from the library rather than the airport. Maybe she'd thought it would make the whole go-getter thing more believable. The officer looked skeptical.
"Ma'am, do you know how fast you were going?"
Did she have to keep calling her ma'am? Buffy wasn't a ma'am. Did she look old enough to be a ma'am?
"Oh... No, I don't. My, uh... speed clocking thingie's broken... or off or something."
The woman nodded, but did not look at all sympathetic. This was not going well.
"Well, you were going fast enough to have to change lanes without signaling several times to avoid a collision. You didn't seem to need your 'speed clocking thingie' to know you were going a little fast. License and registration. Ma'ma."
"Oh! Right. Sorry..."
Buffy fished in her purse for her wallet and searched for her license in the various slots. She really should've had this down to a science by now.
"You know, I've always been fascinated by police work," she said. "I took one of those career tests in high school and it said I'd be well suited for law enforcement."
She handed the woman her license and opened her glove compartment to pull out the registration.
"And, I think it's great, what you're doing," she continued. "Making sure everyone's, you know, doing what they should be and... not doing what they shouldn't. I'm all for keeping the streets safe."
She smiled and handed the woman the registration. She just looked at Buffy blankly.
"I'm gonna need you to stay put while I go run this. Could you turn your engine off, please?"
Buffy frowned and turned the key in the ignition and her car went silent. The woman walked off to do whatever it was cops did with licenses and registrations. Buffy sighed. Of all the times for her to get pulled over.
